Presently the Baltic Port works as ferry and as the container terminal.
Two companies operate at the port: the Baltic Stevedore Company which passenger and cargo terminal (berth ¹ 82 and 83) and FGUP ROSMORPORT the Kaliningrad branch which control a railway terminal (berth ¹84).
The total area of the terminal is 29,54 hectares.
It’s given principal attention for development of a ferry complex as it is planned as guarantee of transport independence of the Kaliningrad enclave.
Since beginnings of 2002 permanent work started on the terminal with handle of passenger-and-cargo ferry "George Ots" on a ferry-line Saint Petersburg - Baltiysk which takes on board 371 passengers and 18 trailers or 88 cars. It gives possibility to a region citizen to go to Russia without boarder’s problems.
In 2005 for best service of constantly growing streams of passengers and cargoes the line Baltiysk - Klaipeda - Karlshamn which serves by the comfortable ferry “LISCO PATRIA” with tonnage - 1710 running meters, passengers capacity - 258 people was open. Frequency of call - once a week.
New railway terminal will be launched in a summer this year. The terminal is equipped with the specialized railway stage on which ferry "Vilnius" will be handled. The beginning of work of the ferry is planned for July, 2007. She is capable to accept on aboard two trains. Cargo capacity - 1700 meters, passengers capacity - 132 people. This ferry will connect German port Sassnitz with Baltiysk. "Vilnius" will call in port Baltiysk once a week.
Presently German an Russian railway authorities declare that this ferry-line will be an important part in transportation of transit cargoes from Germany to Central Asia, Ukraine and other countries on continent.
Also there are a plans to laundering “Baltiysk" on railway terminal. Ferry “Baltiysk“ will start her work on a ferry-line of the Ust-Luga - Baltiysk as from July, 18 this year. Cargo capacity - 2000 running meters, passengers capacity - 12 people. (places are stipulated only for drivers of cargo units).
The shipowner and the operator of the ferries “LISCO PATRIA“ and "Vilnius" is one of the oldest Danish ferry companies “DFDS LISCO”. It is necessary to note, that « DFDS LISCO» is developing quickly for short time in the Kaliningrad area. Rapid development of port Baltiysk has induced the company « DFDS LISCO » to open in Kaliningrad agency OOO « DFDS LISCO Kaliningrad » for service of above mentioned ferries.
The port Baltiysk also handles the container vessel as well. Demand for the transshipment of the containers grows constantly, therefore many companies declared about their plans for opening the direct lines. It’ll become continuation of ocean transportations. Marketing researches show increasing of transshipment of containers to Kaliningrad in times including through port Baltiysk.
